Christmas comes early for Australian

23/12/2006:// Christmas came early for Australian Kai Otton after securing a place on the 2007 World Championship Tour.
Tnsight team rider took out the aptly named 4Star La Santa Surf Pro in the Canary Islands, in October, nailing it with a sick frontside air reverse, to move into qualifying position for next season's WCT circuit.
Otton then guaranteed his spot in Hawaii, finishing the year rated 15th and officially part of the sport's elite.
Sponsored by Insight surfboards and clothing throughout his years on the World Qualifying Series, and regularly featuring in the brand's creative ads, Otton has played an integral part in the company's rapidly increasing international presence.
The 26-year-old gained a huge boost to his profile a few years back at an infamous wave called 'Dead Mans' one massive day. The goofy footer has always charged, but exposure from this session brought this fact to the wider surfing world's attention. No doubt a huge benefit when the WCT reaches waves of consequence next year, like Teahupoo, Cloudbreak, and Pipe.
Prior to a big celebratory night out with the boys in Hawaii, Kai summed up his feelings. "Five years I've been trying to make it, so it's almost surreal now that I have, like when I won in the Canaries. So unbelievable, but feels like a huge weight has been lifted for sure."
ASP tour icon Al Hunt offered his take on Otton's achievemen: "He qualified solidly. The win in the Canaries, a 3rd in Newcastle (AUS), plus his best result probably being a 5th at the Super Series in Hossegor.
"Even after lacerating his knee before his next heat at Sunset last week, he still had a positive attitude about competing with stitches in. Kai fits in well on tour and should have long career there," he added.
