Third date of tournament kicks off with music fest
by Ellen Zoe Golden
13/12/2006:// Antonio Pilurzu, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica, announced today that the third date of the 2006-07 Circuito Nacional de Surf (CNS) will take place this weekend, December 16-17, at Guanacaste’s Playa Tamarindo. Called Trofeo High Tide, the tournament is the first this season that will bring together at one beach competitors in all divisions— Open, Women’s, Junior (18 years and under), Junior Women’s (18 and under), Boys (16 years and under), Grommets (14 years and under), Mini-Grommets (12 years and under), Bodyboard, Longboard, Longboard Juniors (18 and under), Longboard Women’s, Masters (35 and over) and Novice (no prior contest experience).
Trofeo High Tide begins each day on the beach in front of the rivermouth at 7:00 a.m. For this 3-star contest, inscriptions will take place Friday, December 15, at High Tide Surf Shop, between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. (The price is c6000 for this date only, with c6000 to register for the entire year if you did not pay the annual fee at a previous contest. To register before Friday, call the FSC office at the number below.)
For Tamarindo’s 13-year-old Nataly Bernold, the Circuito’s return to her home beach means she could continue dominating the Junior Women’s and Women’s categories. Bernold won 1st place Junior Women’s at the mid-November CNS season opener Copa Mango Boca Barranca, then followed that with a 1st place trophy at the premier Women’s contest at the late-November Pinilla Classic.
“One always tries to arrive very positive at the competitions, and this time I feel very optimistic of that I will be able to make a showing in Tamarindo, one that will add those top points to the general rankings,” Bernold indicated.
During the event this weekend, the 1st place winners in each of the categories will receive 1000 points.
Prior to (and along with) the weekend’s Trofeo High Tide surf competition, the FSC has organized a full slate of fun. The first of these activities is the OP Tamarindo Music Fest ‘06, which begins with a live performance on Wednesday evening, December 13, at La Barra, and continues each night at that club or at Babylon Discotheque, where the best DJs in the country will entertain the surfers and their guests.
OP Tamarindo Music Fest ‘06
December 13: Música Tropical live performance, La Barra, 9:00 p.m.
December 14: Reggae Nights, Babylon Discotheque, 9:00 p.m., DJ Acon.

December 16: Surf Party, Babylon Discotheque, 9:00 p.m., DJ Jeremy.
In addition, on Sunday, after the surf contest is completed, the third competition of the Miss Chica Surf will take place. At the first two CNS dates, the winners were Arielle Weller and Erica Valverde – both from Playa Dominical as well as Kailani Jiménez of Playa Hermosa. In Tamarindo, girls may inquire at the Circuito site, or call Lorena Vera, Water Stars Models Agency in Costa Rica at 869-2972, for more information.
