On the road with six of Guernsey's best
by George Mojo
30/11/2006:// Six of Guernsey's best surfers aim to put the island's surfing in the picture during a six-day road trip around the Cornish coast.
Reigning British student number one Matt Le Matire, Channel Island and Guernsey champion Jon Wallbridge, Rip Curl-sponsored Tom Hill, Dan Hewlett, Will Jones and Stu Blondel are on a mission to prove that Guernsey, although long forgotten by most of the British surf media, can produce national standard surfers.
It is hoped the Extravert-sponsored trip will result in the making of a surf documentary called Kernow Or Never due to be released in March next year.
Photographer Matt Gill is inviting members of the British surf world to go along and watch the surfers in action.
"I will personally be filming from both land and water as well as taking still photography for the dvd production," said Gill.
"As the boys are trying to prove themselves it may be possible to arrange a session where they will be surfing the same spot as the top English pros so a true comparision can be made."
The team will follow the lead of Matt Le Maitre, who is currently studying in Falmouth, on Cornwall's south coast.
"We'll be surfing at whichever spot we deem to be best on the day but are certainly hoping to have at least a couple of sessions at the big name breaks should they turn," said Gill.
"People shouldn't underestimate the importance of this trip to the surfers involved as they believe they are ready to compete with the nation's top surfers and this is their big chance to prove to everyone else that they are of that level," he added.
