Circuito Nacional de Surf gets under way

28/11/2006:// The second date of Costa Rica’s 2006-07 Circuito Nacional de Surf (CNS)—and the first contest of the season for the Open, Women’s, Bodyboard, Longboard, Longboard Women’s, Longboard Juniors and Masters (35 and over) categories—will take place tomorrow, November 25 and Sunday, November 26, at the Pinilla Classic at the Guanacaste province’s Playa Avellanas. The tournament, which begins each day at 7:00 a.m. in front of the beach inside Hacienda Pinilla Beach Resort and Residential Community, on the north side of Avellanas, is a 3-star event, were the 1st-place winners in every category will receive 1,000 points towards their rankings.
Tomorrow, the present Costa Rican National Surf Champion, Isaac Vega, will begin his campaign to defend his Open division title in these very familiar waters. Last year, the surfer from nearby beach town Tamarindo, won 1st place in this contest, and from that date onward remained at the top of the rankings.
“The truth is, I feel really strong, especially since I’m returning to the site of the Pinilla Classic where I began the march last season,” Vega said. “I have been training hard, and also participating in some local contests with the purpose of hardening myself, like a soldier to fire. I know I can go far, although, I know it is going to be difficult, because the level of surfing in this country grows higher every day and I keep coming up against new rivals.”
The rest of the 2005-06 Champions to beat are: Anna Garaway/Women’s (USA), Rónald Reyes/Longboard (Jaco), Hannah Rico/Longboard Women’s (Jaco), Louis Maresca/Masters (Tamarindo), and Iván Castillo/Bodyboard (Quepos).
The Pinilla Classic date of the CNS will offer one of the new features of the annual surf tournament, the debut of the Longboard Juniors category for those 18 years old and younger. This new classification was created to allow for more competitive development for younger athletes.
Inscriptions for Pinilla Classic will take place Friday, November 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cala Luna Hotel and Villas. The price is c6000 for this date only, with c6000 fee to register for the entire CNS year.
Later, there will be a welcome celebration at La Barra in Tamarindo, beginning at 9 p.m.
Saturday evening, November 25, the official Surf Party will take play at Babylon Bar in Tamarindo.
In addition to the contest, the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica, along with Water Stars Models Agency, a Miss Nacional Circuito de Surf Girl contest. At each of the nine dates of the CNS, a winner will be chosen who will qualify for an April competition at the Gran Finals. The women who wish to register for this contest, must be of legal age. The winner of last weekend’s Copa Mango Boca Barranca date of the CNS was Arielle Weller.
“We are looking for a surfer girl from the Nacional Circuito event, that has some important characteristics such as kindness, a positive attitude, sparkle and looks great on the beach,” explained Lorena Vera, owner of Water Stars.
