Guatemala initiates rankings to sedn leaders to ISA juniors
by Ellen Zoe Golden
28/11/2006:// Antonio Pilurzu, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica (FSC), in cooperation with Julio Mejicanos, President of Aso De Guatemala, jointly announced the completion this past weekend of the 2006-07 Nacional Circuito de Surf tournament in Guatemala. In optimal conditions at Rancho Carrillo, Spiacate, with waves of 4 to 6 feet, approximately 50 surfers vied for various trophies under the experienced eye of Costa Rica’s only International Surfing Association-certified (ISA), FSC Head Judge Yeffrey Rojas.
On Saturday, November 18, Rojas ran a three-hour Judges Clinic with five Guatemalans, including one who worked with both Rojas and Association of Surfing Professionals’ Wade Sharp this past July at the Adio’s Central American Championships Adrenlina presented by Freestyle in Playa Esterillos, Costa Rica.
“They were already pretty organized, they have a lot of energy and they want to grow.so there was a lot of interest from everybody who participated,” Rojas reported. “Afterwards, I talked to the surfers and told them what the judges were looking for. Then, the next day at the contest, I saw them doing what I said—nice bottom turns, trying to do the maneuvers close to the pocket, and that means they really want to do well. Guatemala has a lot of kids coming with a lot of talent.”
According to Rojas, the relationship between Mejicanos of Guatemala and Pilurzu of Costa Rica is very close, like a “brotherhood,” and there is a mutual respect between the countries’ surfers. “What I saw is that the surfers are very proud of Costa Rica growing and doing well. They are our brothers too, and so we want to do anything we can to help them do well. I had a great time in their beautiful country and was treated very well.”
Rojas’ trip to Guatemala, along with the Central American Surf Championships (which includes Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicargua and Panama), is another step toward uniting the Central American surf world. With Guatemala’s Circuito, and the subsequent dates in that country, they have a ratings system in place that will select a Guatemala National Surf Team to go to Costa da Caparica, Portugal, May 4-13, for the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships 2007.
“Costa Rica wants to promote surfing in all of Central America, so the Federacion is in a position to help Guatemala, so we decided to help for this reason,” Pilurzu explained. “When we talk to Julio Mejicanos, we talk the same language. Julio is a guy who is really helping all the surfers there. In the surf world, if you don’t have a guy who is passionate and helping all the guys with his heart, you can’t get the results you need. And he’s getting the results. ”
“Now, the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica hopes the example of financial support that the Guatemala government gives to their surfers that allows them to grow and to represent their country around the world will be followed by our government. Guatemala’s government understands how important surfing is to tourism,” he concluded.
