Radical display earns Hapgood top spot
by George Mojo
28/11/2006:// A radical display of power surfing earned Dan Hapgood top spot at the second Tsunami Cup in South Wales.
Hapgood excelled in the stormy surf conditions at Rest Bay, in Porthcawl to finish ahead of Greg Owen, Tom Anderson and Tom Padden.
Despite raging conditions, and the odd burst of hail stones, the event was very well turned out - with all round one heats full.
Conditions improved a little through the first day, and some round three heats were even held in the Point, which was a rare privilege for kings of the peak Ian Bowen and Gerry McKay.
The finals were then held on Sunday morning in rapidly deteriorating conditions.
Steve Horn held off a challenge from Paul Anderson and Tim Aylett in the Longboard while Alyssa Podesta won the Ladies ahead of Anne Gallagher and Port Talbot's Cara Johnson.
In the Juniors, local favourite George Schofield finally won his first contest, putting clear light of day between himself and the rest of the field with a series of well ridden waves.
During the showpiece Open final Porthcawl -raised but Plymouth-based Dan Hapgood somehow managed a cheeky tube ride, just pipping last year's Champ Greg Owen and Tom Anderson for the title.
Negotiations are afoot to bring BCBC into the running of this event next year - which would be a huge development for Porthcawl surfing, and for Surf Relief.
On the Saturday evening a fundraising event was then held in the Jolly Sailor. Hot funk act Freak Unique held a free gig, while an auction took
Over seven hundred pounds for the charity Surf Relief. A big thanks to some of the top bidders, such as Harry Case and Phil Cooper, as well as all the companies who donated gear - The Realm, On Fire, Santa Cruz, Elusive, Luke Young Shapes, Porthcawl Surf, Animal and Free Spirit.
