Two time boys champion rises up to take 1st
by Ellen Zoe Golden
20/11/2006:// The reigning Costa Rican National Grommets Surf Champion, Carlos Muños of Playa Esterillos, along with the two-time National Boys Surf Champion Jairo Perez of Jaco, hit the water this past weekend in Boca Barranca, along with 56 other young boys and girls, to kick off the 7th edition of the country’s Circuito Nacional de Surf (CNS). For a short while, this 2-star Copa Mango competition was a brand new, evenly, ranked playing field. And, for the first time ever, the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica (FSC) organized this particular event solely to accommodate the large number of Junior (18 years and under), Boys (16 years and under), Grommets (14 years and under), Mini-Grommets (12 years and under) and Junior Women’s (18 and under) who have turned up over the past year to compete in the CNS.
By Sunday, Perez, who this month returned from California, where he had won 1st place Men’s in a National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) contest in Encinitas, had made the leap up one category to win the top stop in the Juniors division in Boca Barranca. While this Juniors’ win really came as no surprise to anyone on the beach who had watched Perez frequent the Open finals last year, for the youngster, this weekend’s placement was a much more solid acknowledgement of his progress.
“This season, I am competing with a strong desire to grow and be consistent,” he affirmed. “The experience in California helped me to grow so much. I had been training a lot here, and I got a desire to compete outside of the country, and my goal is to always push myself to do as much as I can to improve. This year in the Circuito, I will register as a Junior with the purpose of reaching new goals.”
Muñoz, now 14, has also had improved his skills and held onto to his own leadership role, taking 1st place once again in the Grommets category.
“I have a lot of desire to surf to 100 percent of my abilities. I also want those abilities to be taken into account when the Federacion selects the National Team that will travel to the Portugal for the Juniors,” Muñoz said after his win, speaking of the Quiksilver International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Surfing Championships 2007.
While 1st place winners of the Copa Mango, including Muñoz and Perez, pocketed 500 ranking points, and 2nd place earned 430, and 3rd scored 365 and 4th 335, part of the reward of the CNS includes selection for the Costa Rica National Surf Team trips to competitions such as the one mentioned above. Costa Rica just returned from Huntington in October, where the National Surf Team earned 8th place out of 33 countries in the 2006 Lost Energy Drink ISA World Surfing Games, and scored a historic copper medal in the ISA Nations Cup Tag Team.
“At the moment, I want to continue with my studies because that is very important in order for me to be somebody in my life,” Muñoz added. “As to surfing, I practice everyday because I want to raise my level and start winning in an advanced category. Last year, I stood out in Grommets, but now it is more difficult, because there are others who are making such great efforts.”
One of the surprises of the Copa Mango Boca Barranca, came when Jaco’s Anthony Flores finished his two-day run in Boys with a 1st place trophy, just one step ahead of Perez, who placed 2nd. Colombiano Anderson Tascon was 3rd, and Jordan Hernandez, also of Jaco.
Reported Flores: “One always has the desire to win, especially in the beginning of the Circuito, when it’s most important to start off on the right foot with a lot of purpose and spirit. This win will help my momentum and performance in the next few competitions.”
Nataly Bernold also continues the triumphant drive she began in her premier season last year. The Junior Women’s representative from Tamarindo, started off her new term with a 1st place crown in the Copa Mango by taking off on a pair of high scoring waves at the end of her final that clinched her win with confidence.
As expected, a new surfing category called Novices, open to anyone new to competition, debuted in Boca Barranca.
