News Capel and Pearce dominate BPSA leaderboard

Headworx team leads the charge by Ben Byfield

06/11/2006:// As we approach the end of another thrilling season of British surfing, the Headworx team is once again leading the charge on the competitive circuit as Reubin Pearce and Matt Capel prepare to battle it out for the coveted British Pro Surfing Association’s UK Tour title at the final event in Newquay this weekend.

They said it was ‘his season’ last year, but Headworx rider and defending British Pro Champion Reubin Pearce has held his place at the top of the 2006 BPSA UK Tour since the third event and will not give up his crown without a fight. Official standings released by the British Professional Surfing Association today put the Newquay-based champion clear of Lew Whittaker, his nearest rival, by 246 points. If he were to prevail, Reubin would become the first ever surfer to win back-to-back BPSA Tour titles.

Former Champions Sam Lamiroy (2003) and Mark Harris (2002) are not far behind Whittaker and could also steal Reubin’s crown, but the biggest challenge will surely come from fellow Headworx rider and young gun Matt Capel whose recent form has blown away the judges as well as many of Britain’s best-known surfers. Coming off back to back wins at the Headworx Welsh Open and the Island Style South Coast Challenge, few would bet against the 20-year old from South Devon as he attempts to become the first ever surfer to claim both BPSA Open and Junior Tours in the same season. Matt secured the British Pro Tour Junior Title in Wales in September.

After claiming his first BPSA title last year, Reubin Pearce is yet to win an event this season, but his powerful, controlled style and consistent form has paid dividends, finishing Runner-up at the Lusty Glaze Night Surf and making the finals in Thurso and Praa Sands. “It feels great to be in the lead,” commented the Headworx man, affectionately known as ‘Strawbs’ “but I’ve yet to reach my best this season. I’m determined to surf to the best of my ability in Newquay and hopefully I can go all the way in the final event.”

Meanwhile his team mate Matt Capel has exploded onto the tour leaderboard in the last two events. After missing out on the first two events through injury, he has been making up for lost time, finishing 3rd at Lusty Glaze and St Ives, and then claiming his first ever British open event win at the Headworx Welsh Open in September. After winning again at Praa Sands, the youngest surfer in the top 15 has amassed 3838 points from just four events – giving him the highest average score on the tour. With surfers’ top five scores counting towards the title, from a maximum of seven events, Matt only requires a 4th place finish at Newquay to secure the title, irrespective of how the other surfers finish.

So it promises to be a thrilling weekend in store. Everyone at Headworx would like to take this opportunity to wish Reubin, Matt and all the BPSA surfers the very best of luck as they chase their final tour placings.
