Great conditions for the 14th Classic

17/10/2006:// Conditions for the remaining five categories of the 14th Jesus Surf Classic, held over the weekend of 14th and 15th October could not have been better.
Unusually mild weather was accompanied by clean solid 4ft offshore surf on Saturday with slightly smaller conditions for the Sunday.
The event run by Christian Surfers UK, and held at Croyde Bay, North Devon was being held due to flat conditions for the Saturday of the original date on 9th September, which meant only three of the eight categories were completed.
The ‘Jesus’ once again this year attracted over 160 of the Uk’s top surfers competing for over £2,000 in the eight surfing categories. Smooth running of the event was aided as always by 100 volunteers from Christian Surfers UK from around the country.
The majority of the heats were run in excellent conditions throughout the Saturday, leaving three semi finals and five finals being run on the pushing tide on Sunday morning.
The hotly contested Open surf event, was won by travelling Aussie surfer Rhys Olivey, who won £250 and a trophy. His power surfing throughout the event impressed many spectators and competitors alike. Close behind in second place was Paignton’s Gary Wells, who defeated up and coming star, Jayce Robinson into third place with Jake Scott in fourth.
In the ladies, a tough final saw current English womens champion, and Croyde local Kathleen Spears defeat current Welsh womens champion Joanne Dennison. Westward Ho’s Sophie Hellyer was third with Porthcawls Breige Lawrence fourth.
In some of the most exciting surfing of the weekend, St Ives Jayce Robinson charged through to victory in the Junior ( U18’s ) division. He defeated Newquays Tom Butler,.and North Devon’s Connor Spears, who were second and third respectively. Billy Norways also competed very strongly in a very exciting final.
The masters final was a very close call with Newquays Roger Knight, as in 2005, beating Jed stone into first place. The two surfers could only be separated by a countback. In an identical result to last year Steve Harvey was third with local Pete Oram fourth.
The final category of the weekend saw the Cadets ( U16’s ) making the most of the stiffening offshore winds, which continued to provide very contestable open faces. Toby Donachie from St Merryn came through to take the title ahead of Woolacombe’s Stuart Campbell, with Croyde’s Lyndon Wake third and Matt Burner from South Devon fourth.
The presentations took place in front of a good crowd, all of whom showed their appreciation to the competitors and Christian Surfers volunteers alike. Phil Williams thanked the sponsors, and God for providing some amazing waves. Two hours later the waves died virtually completely, so you must make your own mind up as to whether God was taking care of the waves !!
