Headworxs team head for North Spain
by George Mojo
16/10/2006:// Fifteen of surfing's rising stars have been selected for the Headworx English Surf Team competing at the European Junior Championships in Northern Spain.
The squad, which also includes six youngsters from Devon, will be pitted against teams from Portugal, Spain and France at the beachbreak of Ferrol in Galicia.
The English Surfing Federation selected the 16 representatives across a range of levels including shortboard, longboard and bodyboarding.
England's biggest hopes lie within the Under 18 division, with current English Junior Champion Reubyn Ash, from Bude, and Newquay'scurrent British Champion Tom Butler leading the charge.
Ash won the Under 16 category last year, and is hot favourite to take the title.
The female contingent will be lead by Croyde's Kathleen Spears, in the Under 18 girls, along with Holly Donnelly.
Not content with just one division, current English Ladies Champion, Spears, will also represent England in the Under 18 Bodyboard for Girls.
Young grommet, Luis Eyre, is looking to impress in the Under 14 division. Born in Portugal, Luis holds a British passport through his mother.
Toby Donachie from North Cornwall will also join him in the youngest division.
In the U18 longboarding field, current British and English Junior Champion, Adam Griffiths, from Newquay, will line up as a leading contender.
Having finished second in the Under 16 division in 2004, Griffiths, will be looking to go one better.
ESF Head Coach, Tony Good is confident the squad will perform well in the contest.
"This year's team is looking very strong. Having taken third place in last year's event, we are hoping to make top three again or even better.
In addition, some of the young guns have huge potential to do well and take home individual titles," he added.
