News Bede Durbidge' first ever victory on the WCT

Bede Durbidge towels them up at Trestles by Rachel Uriarte

20/09/2006:// Billabong Team Rider Bede "Durbo" Durbidge, has upstaged seven times world champion Kelly Slater to take out the Boost Mobile Pro in California. In his first ever World Championship Tour (WCT) win, the 23 year-old Aussie was on fire, ousting Andy Irons, Taj Burrow and local favourite Chris Ward on his way to the final in fun 3-4ft waves at Trestles.

Always a threat in any style of open faced wave, Durbo let his surfing do the talking from the opening heat of the event, using a mixture of powerful top turns and seemingly impossible punts to topple the biggest names in the sport.

"It's the best thing that's ever happened to me," cheered Durbidge. "It's the best year of my life! I've proposed to my fiancé Taryn and I've won my first event and everything's just happened for me this year!

"I'm pretty much blown away but I've always had it in the back of my mind that I've had the potential to win," Durbidge continued. "I knew the crowd was going to hype it up and I knew that if he (Kelly Slater) got anywhere near it, he was going to get it. I was just praying that no waves would come to him and it all happened for me."

The win has rocketed the Queensland surfer into tenth position on the ASP world tour with four events remaining.

Huge congratulations go out to Bede from everyone at Billabong for his long deserved and highly anticipated first win. YEAH DURBO!!!
