Cornwall's first big wave shortboard surfing contest
by George Mojo
20/09/2006:// Organisers are staging Cornwall's first big wave shortboard surfing contest tomorrow (Thursday) .
The Gold Rush Big Wave event is being staged by the British Surfing Association at Newquay's Fistral Beach.
It's a new concept in British surfing competition and will be used to help selectors view potential GB team members in quality waves.
Surfers taking part in the event were given 72 hours notice of it being staged which was determined by the track of a deep low pressure system in mid Atlantic.
As well as experiencing the rush of taking the drop on eight foot plus waves, those taking part stand the chance of winning £3,000 in prize money.
Surfers taking part include British number one Russell Winter, Geordie Sam Lamiroy and prolific British champion Alan Stokes.
Karen Walton, the National Director of the British Surfing Association, has been monitoring weather conditions ahead of giving the green light: "In the past we have had problems arranging competitions to coincide with good conditions. Ultimately it is always up to the ocean."
"We wanted a big wave shortboard competition in the UK and this seems the way to do it. When Fistral is at its best it's amazing and that's when we want our best surfers in the water, utilizing the power of big waves to show the judges what they are really capable of. This event will raise the bar of UK competitive surfing," she added.
Anyone wanting to enter the first BSA Gold Rush Surf Contest can contact the International Surfing Centre in Newquay, on 01637 876474.
