Young British surfers prepare for the weekend
by George Mojo
14/09/2006:// Young British surfers across the country are putting in the last hours of training in preparation for the 2006 Billabong British Junior Championships this weekend.
The teams at the British Surfing Association (BSA) and sponsors Billabong and North Cornwall District Council are all making the final arrangements and preparing themselves for what is expected to be the biggest ever entry.
The championships, widely recognised as one of the key events on the British surf calendar, will take place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September at Widemouth Bay in Bude in North Cornwall.
Surfing his home break, local boy Reubyn Ash will be looking to retake the title after his victory last year when he impressed the judges with a display of powerful, radical moves.
He joined a record number of 150 surfers who traveled to North Cornwall to compete and, with the continual growth of British competitive surfing, the BSA is expecting an even bigger entry this year.
The event includes 6 divisions including Under 12s, Under 14s, Under 16, Under 18, Under 14 girls and Under 18 girls. Over £1,500 is up for grabs as well as lots of Billabong and Kustom Goodies.
Karen Walton, National Director, BSA said, “The Billabong British Juniors is a great event and the phenomenal entry from last year shows just how strong the enthusiasm is at this level. The surfers and their families travel from all over the country and the location at Bude makes an ideal venue.”
Sam Carrier, surf marketing coordinator at Billabong Europe, commented, “At Billabong we are stoked to continue our sponsorship of the British Junior Championships. Supporting junior surfing is what our brand is about and this contest is the perfect place to see the most talented and determined young surfers giving their all for a British title. We’re looking forward to a great weekend of surfing and wish all the competitors the best of luck.”
Anyone looking to enter should contact the BSA on 01637 876474.
