News Porthtowan Beach Clean

SAS clean up at Porthtowan on Sept 16 by Howard Swanwick

12/09/2006:// Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are organising a beach clean at Porthtowan from 1pm – 4pm on Saturday the 16th of September. It is part of the annual Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Beachwatch survey. As well as the chance to help out with the beach clean there are lots of other activities going on. Volunteers will get 2 chances to win £50 for picking up the most litter. They can also take part in the cotton bud challenge, with giant pugil stick style cotton buds. Volunteers will help SAS to add their unique campaigning style to this beach clean with their The No Butts on The Beach and Return to Offender campaigns. SAS will also be providing refreshments for all and everyone is welcome.

This beach clean is part of the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) annual Beachwatch Survey, which itself is part of a worldwide survey. The results from SAS's beach clean will feed into the Beachwatch survey giving invaluable information on the state of our coastline, a great help with campaigning.

We need as many volunteers as possible to help this beach clean and survey. As the Chinese proverb goes 'many hands make light work' and this is especially true with beach cleans. SAS will provide refreshments, gloves, bags, survey sheets and everything you will need. Plus, 2 lucky teams will be going home with £50 for their efforts, and the giant cotton bud challenge is great fun for everyone. All we want from you is to turn up in appropriate attire, be that sun tan lotion or a good jumper.

SAS Campaigner Andy Cummins says: "Marine litter is a problem that faces all beach users and marine wildlife. It’s a huge problem, but, it's one we can all do something about. We need as many volunteers as possible to help out our beach clean on the 16th, we will try and make it as fun as possible with loads to do, refreshments and the chance to take part in the Return to Offender campaign."
