Reubyn Ash succeeds at Rip Curl Pro Junior
by George Mojo
20/08/2006:// Bude's Reubyn Ash was among a handful of top up-and-coming British pro surfers to light up the Rip Curl Pro Junior in South West France.
Ash, from Widemouth Bay, made it through to the fourth round of the contest - the lastest of the European series.
After scoring some great waves on his way through to the last 64, he was eventually undone by Brazilian Charlie Brown.
It was a great finish for the youngster on the back of the recent pro junior event in Lacanau.
South Devon's Matt Capel was the next to suffer at the hand of the South American in chunky three foot waves at Hossegor.
Despite a comprehensive five point defeat, Capel was the highest-placed British surfer at the event.
Earlier in the event, England international Jayce Robinson, from St Ive's saw his chances dashed by Australian Dion Atkinson and Frenchman Joan Duru.
France's Nathan Curren and Israel's Omer Levin put out Briton Mitch Corbett in round two.
Newquay's Tom Butler was also a round two casualty, finishing four in the last heat of the round. His 7.73 points total wasn't good enough to shake off Australian Sam Page and Lukas Guichard, from France.
North Devon's Stuart Campbell and John Magrath were unable to get past the second round stage. Campbell was last behind Hawaiian TJ Barron while Magrath was denied on the countback after tying in second place with American Dylan Graves.
The final was won by France's Joan Duru from Brazilian pair Hizunome Bettero and Pablo Paulino. Australian Matt Wilkinson was fourth.
