News Junior Longboarder takes Title at the Cornish & Open

[Ben Haworth taking first place honours]

Established surf contest runs at Porthtowan by Howard Swanwick

14/08/2006:// This weekend saw the longest established surf contest in the UK, the ‘Cornish and Open’ delivered successfully once again at Porthtowan beach in Cornwall.

Despite challenging conditions throughout the 3 day event, the surfers in all divisions put on a great show of excellent surfing ability. The contest is well regarded and so attracts a strong field of competitors from all over the UK. 2006 was no exception with even some international surfers from South Africa and Australia pitting their skills against the home grown talent.

One of the most significant achievements of the whole event was delivered by Ben Haworth in the Open Longboard contest. Ben caused a major upset in the semi finals when he found himself drawn against Ben Skinner, the current British and English Champion and the current British and English Junior Champ, Adam Griffiths, both from Newquay. His semi final heat also included a talented South African determined to collect a few British scalps. Ben came first, knocking out both Ben Skinner and Adam Griffiths and progressing to the final where he beat the last 3 other surfers. This was a great win for Ben who was lauded as ‘the new kid on the block’ by the Contest Director ‘Minnow Green’.
