Llewellyn Whittaker offers professional supervision
by George Mojo
09/08/2006:// Newquay's Llewellyn Whittaker was one of the only British men to achieve a place in the Rip Curl Boardmasters last week and now the Freespirit English Surfing Federation (ESF) surf school, is giving people the unique opportunity to learn to surf under his professional supervision.
On Saturday the 19th of August, Llewellyn will be making himself available to lead the second of the 'learn to surf with the pros' surf clinics at Fistral Beach this summer.
Llewellyn has been storming through various competitions in the last year, gaining respect and a top line of results. His inclusion in the World Qualifying Series (WQS) five star mens open competition at the Boardmasters served to consolidate his position as one of the top surfers in the UK.
Originally from South Africa, 28 year old Llewellyn is a fast, snappy, ambitious surfer and is now sitting at 3rd place on the BPSA tour. Llewellyn is extremely likeable and enthusiastic and committed to encouraging British surf from the grass roots levels up, making him an ideal coach for the pro clinics.
Llewellyn says, "I love introducing people to surfing for the first time so the ESF pro-clinics are perfect. They are a great idea. I'm also glad that I can give something back to the ESF because they have helped me since I moved to the UK."
The Freespirit ESF surf school is one of Newquay's leading surf instruction centres and offers the best value for money and top safety standards in a laid back, fun, safe environment and atmosphere. The ESF is particularly special because all profits from the surf school, generated from the lessons sales, are ploughed straight back into supporting promising English surfers and providing the framework of support that they need to develop as the next generation of top athletes.
The Freespirit 'earn to surf with the pros clinics' add yet another dimension to the surf school. In July 'Egor' Harris led the first session. Following Llewellyn's clinic on the 19th there will be a girls-only clinic with Dominque Kent on August 28th. And on the 16th September top bodyboarder Rob Barber will take to the waves with keen participants.
Rob is also the head coach at the Freespirit ESF Surf School and he says, "We're really stoked that the Freespirit backing of the ESF surf school has made it possible for us to be running these clinics. We think that it is going to have such a positive impact on the UK surfing scene and as a result of the Freespirit deal across all their stores we're expecting that people will come from all over the country to attend the pro days. The ESF is all about getting as many people as possible surfing and it's great to be linking our surf school work with the English team and making it possible for the pros to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm."
