Turning surfing on to green power
by Howard Swanwick
28/07/2006:// The EcoSurf Project, a UK based environmental surfing organisation, has launched a new campaign to try to get all the surf related businesses in Britain to change over to electricity generated from renewable sources.
The ‘Surf Switch’ campaign is primarily aimed at surf shops, surf schools, shapers and manufacturers of surf accessories, and is being run in conjunction with Ecotricity, the UK’s leading supplier of energy generated from wind power.
The EcoSurf Project hopes that by convincing surf businesses to make the switch to renewable energy the surfing world will not only be underlining its credentials as a community of people who place a high value on the environment, but will also be setting a great example to other industries of how they can take action against global warming.
Sarah Jacob from the EcoSurf Project recently explained why it is so important for the surf industry to make an effort to embrace ‘green’ energy:
“Time and time again it has been shown that wherever surfing leads, others follow. Surfers are often found in the front line of many environmental campaigns and we believe that if the industry can now unite behind the use of renewable energy it will send out a powerful message to the rest of the world that it is not difficult to take positive steps to combat the threat of climate change.”
All those that make the switch will be featured on the EcoSurf Project website (www.ecosurfproject.org) and will be given a ‘Surf Switch’ logo to use to help their customers identify them as an environmentally-aware business.
Switching to renewable energy with Ecotricity is a quick and painless process that takes only 5 minutes, and is the single biggest thing that any individual or business can do to fight global warming and protect the environment. And for every person or company that switches over as part of the ‘Surf Switch’ campaign Ecotricity will donate £15 to the EcoSurf Project to help support their work.
You can find out more information on the campaign at www.ecosurfproject.org/surfswitch or by contacting surfswitch@ecosurfproject.org, and you can sign yourself or your business up to wind power right now by visiting www.ecotricity.co.uk
