Sunday morning Imperial Beach woke up to a familiar stench as sewage-laden water contaminated local beaches.

18/07/2006:// The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health (DEH) posted advisories to ocean users but did not close the beach. Today, the advisory was upgraded to a full closure, but not until 1 p.m., after scores of surfers and swimmers had already entered the water.
The DEH decided to issue the beach closure based on Tijuana River flow and nearshore current data. A flow of approximately 50 million gallons from the Tijuana River was registered as flowing into the surf in just 24 hours. Scripps Institute of Oceanography data showed that currents were bringing this water north towards I.B. and Coronado. According to the DEH, this flow was caused by approximately ½” of rain in the eastern part of the Tijuana River Watershed on Saturday.
On Saturday, Tijuana lifeguards notified Imperial Beach that significant sewage spills were contaminating the beach at Playas de Tijuana. Undoubtably, with the strength and direction of recent nearshore currents, this pollution is also making its way to I.B.
