News Clean water Now! Rally sends powerful message
During Saturday’s community rally and paddle in Imperial Beach, the message was loud and clear to political representatives: CLEAN OUR WATER NOW! Over 200 ocean users rallied and paddled out to support clean water.

13/07/2006:// The event generated over 600 postcards with personal messages to area representatives, demanding they support the community’s fight against the ocean contamination that just last year caused 166 beach closures in parts of Imperial Beach.
Congresswoman Susan Davis, who represents coastal San Diego County from La Jolla to Imperial Beach, was impressed by the magnitude of community support.
“I have never seen this many people, especially young people, take such a firm stand on a community issue,” the congresswoman said as she addressed Ben McCue, the rally’s organizer. Davis had previously scheduled a community meeting in Imperial Beach to discuss federal issues with her constituents. Attendees of the rally dominated her meeting and demanded Davis take a strong leadership role on the issue and support Imperial Beach’s Comprehensive Community Clean Water Action Plan.
“No longer can we afford to sit by passively as our community’s water quality problem deteriorates. We are contracting serious diseases, including Hepatitus, from contact with contaminated water. As our representative you need to support us in our fight to bring clean water to South San Diego beaches!” Said Paloma Aguirre, an Imperial Beach Resident.
The event attracted five TV stations, including FOX NEWS and KUSI and news of the rally dominated Saturday’s airwaves. The cameras were rolling as Serge Dedina, WiLDCOAST's Exective Director, slammed congressmen Brian Bilbray and Bob Filner for using the community's water quality problems as a political springboard. Both politicans recently used political campaigns in which they claimed responsibility for cleaning up the Tijuana River pollution.
"You cleaned up the water, now drink it!" Dedina challenged as he held up a five gallon container of putrid green water collected from the river the day before.
As an indicator of the events success, Rep. Davis requested that community members set up a monthly water quality meeting to assist in the implementation of Imperial Beach’s Comprehensive Clean Water Action Plan. WiLDCOAST was asked to lead a tour for Davis and her staff of the contamination sources within the Tijuana River Watershed later this month.
WiLDCOAST, plans to follow-up on the events success with a CLEAN WATER NOW! March in the Sandcastle Parade on Saturday, July 22 open to the entire public.
