Fat Face Night Surf takes place with contestable surf
by George Mojo
24/06/2006:// The Fat Face Night Surf, part of the Fat Face Night Series and the third leg of the BPSA UK Tour, took place over the weekend at Lusty Glaze with good contestable surf on the Saturday and scorching weather!
Three events were run including Men's, Women's and Longboard as well as the grom tour on Sunday and of course the Freerange Sports Optics Money Move which was best Floater!
Friday greeted the large Lusty crowd with 24 degrees temperatures but unfortunately flat conditions meaning a postponement until Saturday.
However the crowds were treated to a great party featuring live music acts, volleyball competitions and of course the Foster's Barbie! The party carried on until midnight before returning on Saturday for and 8.30 check in!
Saturday greeted the surfers with clean 2 ft surf with the men leading the way. Surfing went on throughout the day with standouts including Matt Capel and Shaun 'Skippy' Skilton in the Men's, Fat Face rider Chris Thompson in the Longboard and current BPSA Champion Nicole Morgan in the Women's comp. One of the talking points of the event at this stage was 12 year old competitor Tassie Swallow who was currently holding the FSO Money Move, the first time a girl, let alone a grom has been in contention for the £250 prize money. Would she be able to hold on???
The heats continued all day in to the evening and the ever increasing Lusty crowd were entertained by, not only the surfing that was improving as the heats went on and the surf got better, but also by once again some fantastic live acts put on by Fat Face that included the BPSA's very own MC extraordinaire, Anton Roberts, who belted out some awesome cover classics.
As the sun went down the semi finalists went in and Tassie's unlikely feat was finally broken by an on fire Alan Stokes who nailed a beautiful floater in the dark to take the FSO Money Move and the £250! With all the semis finished there was just time for the legendary Fat Face fireworks display that lit up the Lusty Sky in spectacular fashion before the finals went in.
The Fat Face Night Surf is one of the most testing events on tour due to the lack of visibility and ability to see sets coming in. Night surfing relies on natural ability to react to the flow and possible changes in direction of any given wave. Any winner of a Night Surf Event will have real natural ability and sense of the waves and the Ocean.
First up were the ladies and Nicole Morgan was unstoppable. She wrapped up the win in the first half of the heat and put her into second place on the ratings.
The longboarders were next and it was a belter, with constant changes in positions between the finalists. Sam Bleakley eventually took it the end with a long right to the beach followed by Lee Ryan, Fat Face's Chris Thompson and finally James Parry.
Lastly it was the Men's Open final. It took place at high tide giving the large crowd a perfect view of the action. In 4th place was Martin Black, a regular EPSA competitor, third went to Skippy Skilton, his first final in a while which will hopefully spur on this very talented surfer to get back in the game, second was current men's tour champ, Reubin Pearce, who after some solid finishes is now back on top of the ratings.
However the man of the day was Alan Stokes whose first few waves, including huge backhand snaps, won him the Fat Face Night Surf 2006.
On Sunday, the action turned to the the BPSA UK Grommets Tour.
The Grom Tour is vital to UK Surfing to keep the UK in touch with the rest of the World. 3 Categories were competed. The Under 12 boys was won by Harry Timson, Gwen Spurlock won the U'16 girls and Newquay local and little ripper, Lewis Clinton won the U'16 boys.
