News Night surf comeback for Reed

Welsh surfing ace returns to competition by George Mojo

17/06/2006:// Welsh surfing ace Nick Reid returns to competition for the first time since suffering an horrific injury practising radical aerial manoeuvres in the Gower.

Reid received multiple fractures to his leg and ankle during a surf session at Three Peaks eight months ago.

The Welsh international has spent the last 12 weeks training for his comeback at this weekend's British Professional Surf Association Fat Face Night Surf in Newquay.

Sessions on Australia's Gold Coast have helped build his confidence and get back back to full fitness.

Reid's dad, Ken, said a lot of hard work had taken place to get to this stage: "Nick's been in Australia and Indonesia surfing waves from six to 15 feet and is really focused on doing well."

"He's really focussed and knows that he has got to deliver. It's doubly important as he's coming in the UK season having missed two events of the tour."

Meanwhile, tour leader Spencer Hargraves is among a top-class field at the event. Having just returned himself from a month-long trip to Australia, he is in great form going into the contest.

"I've had two good results so far and I will be looking to build on that at Lusty. I'm really pleased with the way I'm surfing at the moment and feeling confident about my performance," he said.
