BPSA Champion continues title defence
by Ben Byfield
17/06/2006:// With the Lusty Glaze Night Surf taking place this weekend, BPSA Champion and Headworx rider Reubin Pearce will be the man to beat in this, the 3rd stop of the 2006 BPSA Tour.
Reubin has spent the last few weeks training at home in Newquay and on a photo trip with the Headworx team, after making a good start to the year with semi- and quarter-final placings in Scotland and Croyde.
The 23-year-old was the star of last year’s BPSA Tour, taking out the Jersey, Isle of Wight and Sri Lankan titles on his way to a comfortable tour victory in November. Now Reubin is focusing on his summer schedule of events which includes the Newquay Boardmasters in July and WQS events across Europe.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back into the contests again after a few weeks off. Lusty is always a fun event and I am feeling positive and relaxed. Its bound to be harder this year with more attention on me as the defending champ but I am just staying focused on my own surfing and taking each heat at a time.” commented Reubin.
Alongside the powerful goofy-footer, fellow Headworx riders Matt Capel and Johnny Fryer will also be aiming to make an impression in this event. Matt blew away the opposition in this event last year to finish as Runner-up in the Open division and the 20-year-old ‘speed freak’ is widely regarded as a huge talent for the future with his exciting new-school style.
Meanwhile, new team signing Johnny Fryer is a well-known face on the tour and the defending North East Open Champion is sure to show strongly. The aerial specialist from the Isle of Wight is a former British and English Junior Champion and has been a constant threat to the established pros since graduating to the senior circuit two years ago.
The action kicks off Friday 2pm with the finals scheduled for Saturday evening, followed by music and beach entertainment. Plus, with the Walkabout in town showing all the World Cup games in association with Headworx to celebrate the launch of the ‘England Surf’ clothing range, it promises to be a lively weekend in Newquay!
