News WiLDCOAST Launches Defiende el Mar Radio Show

On June 5, the International Day of the Environment, WiLDCOAST launched its Defiende el Mar (Defend the Ocean) show on Radio Frontera 102.5 FM. by Serge Dedina

07/06/2006:// On June 5, the International Day of the Environment, WiLDCOAST launched its Defiende el Mar (Defend the Ocean) show on Radio Frontera 102.5 FM. The goal of Defiende el Mar, which is being developed and produced in collaboration with the Tijuana Estuary, is to raise ocean awareness on both sides of the San Diego/Tijuana border. In a time when many are becoming increasingly alienated by governments on both sides of the border and disillusioned by politicians increasingly swayed by the campaign contributions of special interest groups, Defiende el Mar is a way to give the community a voice. The slogan of Defiende el Mar is “El mar es de todos y para todos. ˇDefiendelo!” or “The ocean is of everyone and for everyone. Protect it!”

The idea for the show grew out of conversations between Oscar Romo, of the Tijuana Estuary, and Ben McCue of WiLDCOAST, who together began thinking of ways to encourage environmental stewardship in the border region. Romo, who has worked in Tijuana communities for many years, sees a significant lack of ocean awareness. “Many people living just a few miles from the coast have no idea that everything they throw out on the street eventually makes its way into the ocean. It is essential that everyone understand the connection between the way we live here on the border and the health of our ocean. The purpose of the show is to create the awareness that the ocean is an amazing resource that we must protect.”

The launch of Defiende el Mar provided an overview of the program, with WiLDCOAST’s program managers, Ben McCue, Aida Navarro and Saul Alarcon, highlighting the role each will play in the Defiende el Mar program. Each Defiende el Mar program will follow the same format but will have a specific topic, ranging from border beach water quality to the importance of marine protected areas. In between expert commentary, interviews and fielding questions from callers, the program will air ocean-related music from around the world. The Spanish–language show will air every Monday from 7-7:30 pm.
