Headworx releases official collection
by George Mojo
05/06/2006:// As patriotic frenzy grips the nation in the build up to the World Cup, Headworx, clothing sponsors of the England Surf Team, has released its official England Surf Collection in the UK.
The high quality range features hard-wearing surf and leisure apparel developed in close consultation with the Headworx team of UK pro surfers - Reuben Pearce, Matt Capel and Johnny Fryer - and the England Surf Team.
With 30 years of heritage in the surfing marketplace Headworx has created an entirely new range of clothing to suit lifestyle enthusiasts and patriotic fans, whilst continuing to provide the functionality demanded by the hardcore surfer.
The collection, featuring the English Surfing Federation's 'Lion' motif, is designed to fly the flag of English surf culture all the way from the beaches of Cornwall to the terraces of Germany and surf spots across the globe.
As part of its partnership with the English Surfing Federation, Headworx will also support 'grassroots' English Surfing activities through royalty contributions from purchases of the official product. Headworx also continues its commitment to rider sponsorships, and the company supports several high-profile English riders, including Matt Capel, Johnny Fryer and Lew Smart.
To coincide with the product launch, the English Surfing Federation are launching a new website dedicated to the England Surf Team at www.englandsurf.com.
The pages will feature profiles of all the top English riders, England team news, English beach guides and events, as well as an official online England store, retailing the Headworx England Surf clothing range.
Ben Byfield, Marketing Manager at Headworx. said "We are absolutely delighted to be launching our exciting new England Surf collection with retailers nationwide and with the ESF's official team website. The range is designed to appeal not only to the demands of our surfing customers but also to a wider range of patriotic fans who want to look good on the beach or about town this summer! We are also delighted to be supporting the future of English Surfing through our partnership with the English Surfing Federation."
Paul Jeffrey, National Director of the English Surf Federation commented: "Headworx support today will help the future surfers of tomorrow. Royalties from every item sold will go back into the grass roots of surfing here in England and contribute to the future development of the industry. The ESF is a non-profit making, non-funded organisation that helps support surfers from all different backgrounds. Our aim is to develop surfers from the grass roots to the winners' podium! We are pleased to announce that Headworx are the official apparel sponsors of the England Surf Team, and the ESF officially endorses this exclusive range of Headworx clothes."
Headworx was started in 1976 by surfers and graphic designers Murray Bourton and Keith Halford, at Burleigh Heads Australia as a tee shirt and boardshorts label, using designs developed by Keith for use on Murray's surfboards. Initially selling to local surfers on the Australian Gold Coast, out of their makeshift garage factory, the brand quickly developed across the Australian east coast to become a well-known label, primarily through the Pipe Dreams retail chain, of which Murray became a director.
In the UK, Headworx has been responsible for the sponsorship of major surf events over the years, such as the Newquay Surf Festival (now the Ripcurl Boardmasters) and has enjoyed high-profile endorsements by key athletes such as Russell Winter, Nathan Phillips and today by up-and-coming talents Johnny Fryer, Matt Capel and Lew Smart.
The company was bought by successful entrepreneur Neil Rotherham and Headworx Limited was formed in the UK, as owners of the global brand.
Under the new ownership it has already sponsored two major, successful events on the British competition circuit - the BPSA Welsh Open in September, and the British Universities Surfing Championships in March.
Headworx has now agreed an 18-month sponsorship deal with the ESF to be exclusive clothing sponsors to the England Surf Team.
