Watergate Bay club hold second contest by George Mojo

05/06/2006:// Watergate Bay surf club has held its second of three surf contests.

Surfers of all ages congregated to battle it out in perfect and unpredicted waist high surf for precious points in seven different divisions. The divisions included open, longboard, under 13, under 16, under 18, masters and the all-new division of the "Micro-Groms".

Surfers as young as four took to the water in the micro-groms event with parents pushing them into the long peeling waves that were on offer.

Top surfing from Eden Vason, the Timson groms, Sophie Good, Jordan Zervas and Ollie Davies made the judges decision very hard but eventually Jake Nicholson exceeded his age to take first and a big bag of goodies.

The event rolled through the day only to be interrupted by burgers and BBQ's.

Highlights included Harry Timson (aged 10) fighting his way into the Open final, Tom Good dominating the U16 and U13 divisions, Helen Zervas taking the ladies event and Lewis Timson winning his packed out longboard final.

However, it was the open final that many came to watch, as the rounds progressed so did the level of surfing.

After a close, low-tide final Craig Steward fended off his younger brother for the second time taking home first place and 1000 points.

The Phoenix pub hosted the after party and Skinners Ale, as title sponsors, fed the crowd with beer.

The third and final event will take place on the 21st of October 2006.

Errant will be running a six-week course for up and coming groms (10 - 17yrs). The course will run after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and will include video coaching, contest drills, dealing with sponsors and general advanced surf coaching. Any up and coming groms interested should contact Chris on 07966 259 839.
