Britain's first O'Neill Academy opens
by George Mojo
04/06/2006:// Britain’s first permanent O’Neill Surf Academy is set to open its doors on the 12th of June, and to celebrate the occasion, top snowboarders, wakeboarders and windsurfers from the O’Neill team will be heading to Watergate Bay to try their collective hands at surfing.
Adam Gendle, Laura Berry and Tim Warwood, all current or previous British snowboard Champions, will be swapping the mountains for the beach, under the capable guidance of Australian Senior Coach Patrick Sweeney.
Seasoned surfer Jake Boex, and youngsters, Stuart Campbell and Alex Baker will be on hand to help Pat out. Both Stuart and Alex had their first taste of surfing at the O’Neill Surf Academy, and are now making huge waves on the National Circuit. Stuart Campbell is the current Under 14 British Champion.
The ‘boarders’ are all fascinated to see just how transferable their skills might be: As Adam Gendle put it - “I can’t wait. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, and to try it for the first time at the Academy is just amazing.”
The O’Neill Surf Academy was the brainchild of Californian and O’Neill rider Richard Schmidt. Traditionally, top O’Neill riders, headed by O’Neill surfers from Santa Cruz, travelled across Europe for one month during the summer offering a series of day-long surf tutorials designed to give 8-16 year olds their first taste of the art of surfing.
To date, 9,000 children from across Europe have graduated from the O’Neill Surf Academy and many have gone on to forge successful surfing careers.
In order to keep the event fresh and the talent coming, O’Neill are launching an exciting new concept with the opening of the first all year round O'Neill Surf Academy in conjunction with West Coast Surfari.
West Coast Surfari are a world renowned and well established Surf School specialising in providing all age and all ability professional surf courses, based at Watergate Bay, Newquay, Cornwall. The new premises are right on the beach where there are many other facilities including the Beach Hut Bar and Bistro, Jamie Oliver’s “Fifteen” retaurant, and the Extreme Store.
