News Skinner adds British title

[Dimulle/ASPEurope.com]

English title for Jersey's finest by George Mojo

29/05/2006:// Jersey's Ben Skinner backed up his English title with victory in the Open division of the Red Stripe British Longboard Championships in Cornwall.

In tricky 3-4 feet waves at Fistral Beach, Skinner, who currrently lives in Newquay, racked up the points with a stylish display.

Welsh and European champion Elliot Dudley, from Swansea, finished in the runner-up spot with Newquay surf coach and ex-British number one Lee Ryan in third.

Fourth-place went to Newquay's Adam Griffiths who made up for his disappointment by winning the junior division.

Ryan also didn't leave the event empty-handed. He won the senior crown ahead of Welsh surfing legend Chris "Guts" Griffiths.

Griffiths, who was a double-title winner in 2005 showed some great touches to pick up first place in the Masters final.

Surfing on one of his own shaped boards, he saw off a strong challenge from Newquay lifeguard Adam Zervas, Malcolm Findlay and Adrian Howell.

Findlay, a lecturer at Plymouth University, was in a class of his own though in the veterans defeating Howell, Dorset's Eric Davies and Jock Paterson.

In the women's final, first place went to Porthtowan's Dominique Monroe, with Candice O'Donnell in the runners-up spot.

The event was organised by the British Surfing Association.

Final results:

Open - 1 Ben Skinner, 2 Elliot Dudley, 3 Lee Ryan, 4 Adam Griffiths.

Senior - 1 Lee Ryan, 2 Chris Griffiths, 3 Chris Webb, 4 Adam Zervas.

Junior - 1 Adam Griffiths, 2 Ben Howarth, 3 OJ Freshwater, 4 Ben Howey.

Masters - 1 Chris Griffiths, 2 Adam Zervas, 3 Malcolm Findlay, 4 Adrian Howell.

Veterans - 1 Malcolm Findlay, 2 Adrian Howell, 3 Eric Davies, 4 Jock Paterson.

Women - 1 Dominique Monroe, 2 Candice O'Donnell, 3 Sophie Skinner, 4 Nina Blake.
