The energy was high for Sunday’s Kids for Clean Water Menehune event in Coronado.

12/05/2006:// As the sun burned through the morning clouds, nearly fifty zinc-painted groms took to the water in fun head-high surf at Coronado Shores. The event was organized by the Coronado Surfing Association with support from the City of Coronado, WiLDCOAST, Emerald City Boarding Source, and Island Surf.
The Menehune event brings environmental awareness of Coronado and Imperial Beach waters to new levels, said John Gillem, founder of the Coronado Surfing Association. We take surfing and clean water for granted. People are again talking about what to do about dirty water. This is how it starts. We are very pleased to have such a fine event, and to have helped in achieving such a local, regional, and even global awareness.
A rally was held for the kids mid-event to highlight the importance, as surfers, of protecting our community’s most valuable resource. The rally was nearly disrupted as a masked lucha libre wrestler calling himself Bajagua el Polluter demanded that the contest be cancelled, claiming he had already paid politicians to support his clean-water plan. The Rally attracted local television media from KUSI and Univision. This year’s Kids for Clean Water Menehune Contest was a great event that highlighted the community’s involvement in passing on the stoke of surfing along with the importance of ocean stewardship to future generations. Mahalo to all the organizers and volunteers who realize that the community must be at the forefront in our fight for clean water. Our kids demand it of us. In the words of Serge Dedina, WiLDCOAST’s Executive Director, If we don’t fight for our oceans, how can we expect our politicians in Washington to?
