News Stokes fired up

Stokes prepares for fourth title by George Mojo

28/04/2006:// Newquay's Alan Stokes will be going for a fourth English title in Cornwall at the end of this month.

The Animal/Salomen team rider, who is a former British professional champion, aims to kick start his UK season where he left off in 2005 with victory in the British finals in Tynemouth.

Defending his English title at Watergate Bay will be no mean feat for the England international.

Among those vying to stop Stokes regaining his crown are fellow Cornish surfers Mark Harris, Spencer Hargreaves and Sean Skilton.

It's unclear if British number one Russell Winter will be in the starting line-up after winning the BPSA Scottish Open at Thurso East. Winter is a past winner of the English title.

Some of the younger competitors including Rip Curl's team rider Jayce Robinson will be using the championships as a warm-up event for the forthcoming World Junior finals to be held in Brazil in May.

Robinson, who has just returned from a 4 month training trip in Australia this week, is looking forward to taking part: "I'm so amped to come back from Australia and get my teeth straight into some events.

"It's been an amazing last 4 months and to return home and get a win at the English and follow that up with a good placing at the Worlds would be a an amazing start to the season for me."

"I made it to the finals of both the junior and cadets at last years English but didn't take home a title so I'm really on a mission this time round," added Robinson.

Other hard-fought titles will be the Randall Davies and Dave Gent memorial trophies which are awarded to the highest-placed Newquay surfers competing in the Open & Junior categories.

The Rip Curl English Nationals take place from April 29th to May the 1st.

The Billabong Welsh National Championships take place over the same weekend, surf permitting, at Freshwater West, in Pembrokeshire.
