British pro champion signs two year deal
by George Mojo
12/04/2006:// British pro champion Reubin Pearce has signed new terms keeping him with the UK Headworx surf team for the next two year.
Cornwall-based Pearce, 23, begins the defence of his BPSA title at the Salt Rock Pro, in Croyde this weekend.
Pearce will be eager to pick up where he left off in 2005 with a string of victories in contests around the world.
Devon's Matt Capel has also been re-signed for the squad which is seen as a coup by team manager Ben Byfield.
"Reubin and Matt are true ambassadors and we're stoked to welcome them back," said Byfield.
Meanwhile, the British surf team has announced it's sending a full squad to the World Surfing Games in California after securing a lucrative sponsorship deal for the trip.
The championships take place at Huntington Beach in October and Britain will be looking to build on it's top 10 finish in Ecuador two years ago.
The Freespirit deal was secured following talks with the Newquay-based British Surfing Association, the sport's governing body.
BSA National Director Karen Walton negotiated the deal: "It means we can send a full team to build on our great result last time and establish British surfing as a major force on the world stage."
Team coach Ester Spears says the team were now focussed on doing well in America.
"Freespirit and the BSA form a great relationship, to the benefit of all in British Surfing."
The British team has now set off for the World Surfing Games and things became a little nerve-racking before departure due to a last minute personal situation which meant that their invaluable team manager had to pull out
