News Ben Byfield joins Brits

[Kirstin Prisk]

Headworx UK surf team manager joins Aloha Cup by George Mojo

23/02/2006:// The Headworx UK surf team manager Ben Byfield will join up with the British squad in South Africa this week to compete in a triangular longboard tournament.

The challenge, which will pit the Brits against South Africa and Namibia, runs alongside the Aloha Cup, organised by the International Surfing Association.

Byfield will be leading the trip party, which includes 15-year-old champion longboarder Ben Howarth and surfers Josh Knowles and Luke Jannaway.

I am stoked, and also more than a little surprised to have been asked to represent Britain. Managing the Headworx team this last year has been a great experience, so I hope I can learn more by taking part in a trip with the national team,” he said.

The 2006 ISA Aloha Cup is one of the first events of its kind to be held since the concept was discussed by the ISA some years ago and the fact that it is taking place in Cape Town is a huge boost for South African surfing.

Great Britain is sending a young team and is hoping the event will provide the youngsters with an opportunity to shine and warm up for the season to come.

Going over to surf in South Africa, against some of the best young surfers on the planet, is a great experience for anyone but being given the opportunity at 15 and 16 years of age, as some of these surfers are, will prove invaluable to them,” said Byfield.

We want to be at the grass-roots of surfing and genuinely want to help the sport progress forward in any way possible," he added.
