News Big wave search

Rip Curl surf exploration underway by George Mojo

18/01/2006:// Since the early 90's Rip Curl have lead the way when it comes to surf exploration. From Tom Curren's journey into Northern Sumatra in the early 90's to more recent discoveries in Russia during the "Red Search" in Sep 04, Rip Curl's "Search" is still very much a brand ethos.

With much of surf exploration taking place in the warmer waters of the southern hemisphere, Rip Curl decided it was time to turn the tables and start a search for new un -ridden frontiers in the Northern hemisphere - throughout the cold waters of the Atlantic.

Underground tube master Robin Kent from St Agnes, Cornwall, and turbo-charged surf photog/ journalist Mikey Smith from Penzance presented the "Search for Isolation" concept to Rip Curl back in early September 05.

The fundamental idea behind this project is to track the huge low-pressure systems and find the best unridden heavy-wave destinations around the North Atlantic from October 05 - March 06, documenting their discoveries on the way.

The boys started the trip in the emerald Isle in early October, teaming up with local surfers John McCarthy, Dave Blount and Californian charger Rusty Long to be the first to tackle new heavy waves previously unsurfed. These new discoveries include the ridiculously heavy but perfect wave the team collectively named "Aileens".

Since the first leg of Search for Isolation, the team have just arrived back from the second and third parts of the journey to spend some time with their families over Christmas.

Rip Curl team rider Robin Kent said: "From a small idea this whole concept has turned into a major project for us. The first 3 trips have been insane, scoring some of the most perfect and uncrowded waves of my life. It's just great to find waves that have not really been seen or ridden before so close to home".
