News Brits in Florida

[ASP/TOSTEE]

Brits start the season in Florida by George Mojo

18/01/2006:// American Shea Lopez will provide an early-season test for North Devon pro surfer Josh Lewan at the opening World Qualifying Series event of 2006 in Florida.

Lopez finished in 43rd place in the top flight world series last year and is eager to return to the prestigious high-profile circuit at the first attempt.

Lewan, meanwhile, finished as the highest-placed Briton on the EPSA tour, and victory over Lopez would certainly provide a welcome boost to his year-ahead aspirations.

The 4-star Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro has certainly attracted a top-class entry including former world number one CJ Hobgood, Lopez's high-flying brother Cory and big-wave maestro Roy Powers, from Hawaii.

Lewan isn't the only British competitor - Welshman Nathan Phillips is seeded into round four against American Morgan Faulkner. There is also plenty of European interest in the shape of of Frenchman Tim Boal, who faces Hawaiian Carroll Nathan. Spaniard Rafael Perez goes against Toby Ogden, Skye Richards and Will Zimmerman in round one.

Although Sebastian Inlet is now renowned for it's big waves, the venue usually guarantees explosive surfing action and will provide an early season indicator for the tour rankings.
