News De Souza ends Mujica hopes in Brazil

[Justin Mujica]

Portugal's Justin Mujica is best European surfer in the Billabong Surf-Eco Festival in Brazil by George Mojo

27/06/2008:// Mujica reached Round 4 where he was eliminated by top Brazilian Adriano de Souza who went onto win the event .
The 29-year-old former ASP European Pro Surf Tour champion and longtime ASP World Qualifying Series campaigner, went through two rounds before his elimination, defeating a couple of experienced competitors including Danilo Costa and Dane Gudauskas.

Mujica, who clinched 900 ratings' points for his equal 17th place in the event, remains out of the ASP WQS Top 100 after this result but will head to the next event with confidence.

Apart from Mujica's promissing result, the festival will not be one event to remember for the European contingent. With seven representatives present in Brazil.

None were able to reach the man-on-man rounds and favorite Patrick Beven, from France eliminated in his first heat in tricky wind blown two foot waves.

Eric Rebière, a former ASP Top 45 surfer, and Joao Guedes both reached Round 3 where they suffered the domination of the Brazilian pack.

Rebière, 30, who was the first French surfer to qualify for the ASP World Tour in 2003, has been chasing his requalification for a couple of years now and remains a powerful surfer at ease in big waves.

Guedes, 22, one of Portugal's top rising surfers, is still looking for a first big result in the ASP WQS jungle but this equal 25th finish will be a serious boost for his confidence.
