Welsh win for former champion by George Mojo

14/10/2005:// Former BPSA champion Mark Harris has closed the gap on tour leader Ruebing Pearce after winning the Headworx Welsh Open.

Harris clinched victory at Freshwater West with a high-scoring 8.83 point wave in the final.

The Newquay surfer relished the big and demanding surf conditions at the Pembroke beachbreak to defeat Johnny Friar, Sam Lamiroy and Llewelyn Whittaker.

Plymouth University student Scott Eastwood, from Jersey, finished in equal ninth place, after finishing equal first in the last event in Scotland.

The Open division title is now wide open with three events of the season remaining.

South Devon's Matt Capel had to settle for runners-up spot in the Pro Junior division after winner Oli Adams took the title on a lefthander during the final seconds of their enounter. North Devon's Adam Thornton was third.

Defending women's champion Kay Holt showed some great touches in the women's final.

Holt, who travelled from Sri Lanka for the event, never quite had the match of Nicole Morgan.

The current ratings leader pulled out all the stops to break Holt's unbeaten run in the BPSA series.

Croyde Bay's Lydon Wake won the Grommets, final, while in the Longboard Welshman Elliot Dudley too the victory, showing why he was one time world number 16.

Toby Atkins won the Freerange Best Cutback award.

The next leg of the BPSA tour takes place in Compton.
