:// Can sharks predict an English storm?

[One good reason for onshore slop. No Sharks.]
Researchers are beginning to conclude that there may be a link between bad weather and sharks behaviour. Sharks have a very acute sensory system, and now its been put forward that they can detect pressure changes in the atmosphere.

News Cornishman gets a second chance

[Colin McPhillips in action in France]

Sennen's Sam Bleakley faces a must-win second round heat at the Oxbow World Longboard Tour event in France by George Mojo

07/05/2008:// The England international finished second his opening heat to American Colin McPhillips and narrowly escaped automatic elimination.

Bleakley's performance earns him a sudden-death second round outing at Les Cavaliers in a bid to join fellow Cornishman Ben Skinner in the last 32.

It was a big ask of Bleakley in Anglet against McPhillips, a former three-time ASP World Longboard Champion but he rose to the challenge.

McPhillips was one of the opening rounds top scorers and finished five clear points ahead of Bleakley and Japan's Anri Nabeshima thanks to a solid 15.25 point result out of possible 20.

"It is good to get through this one as you are always a bit shaky before the first paddle out," said McPhillips.

"I am stoked to be back here in France, it is always a lot of fun to surf in contests and I got a couple of good ones to start."

McPhillips, 33, is a veteran among the world's best longboarders but remains a favorite for the Oxbow WLT crown.

"There are a few young guys coming up and it is really good for the sport," said McPhillips.

"We already know we will have a second event this year and if it is confirmed in California where I live, it will be even more comfortable for me. As long as the new guys don't knock us out, we are right up there."

Skinner, from Newquay, has yet to find out his round three opponent.
