:// Can sharks predict an English storm?

[One good reason for onshore slop. No Sharks.]
Researchers are beginning to conclude that there may be a link between bad weather and sharks behaviour. Sharks have a very acute sensory system, and now its been put forward that they can detect pressure changes in the atmosphere.

News Success for Speller in Jersey opener

[David Speller at La Saline]

David Speller put on his own air show to take the honours at the first event of the inaugural Jersey Bodyboarders 4Season Bodyboard Series held at La Saline on the May Bank Holiday weekend by George Mojo

06/05/2008:// The event was held in small 1-2ft surf, which made it hard work for all the competitors. Nevertheless, there were some good performances as the level of bodyboarding in the island continues to rise.

Strong early performances included Simon Watkins, starting the contest with a solid reverse 360, Peter Bolam, finding some nice lefts performing a series of spins, Dominic Alfano, surfing his best heat to date by stringing together a series of spinners and rolls, and birthday boy Eduardo Afonso who found plenty of good sections to boost some smooth rolls.

Leading the way though were juniors Phil Le Neveu and David Speller, who have come on leaps and bounds in recent months, as they look ever likely to head a changing of the guard as far as the local bodyboard competition scene goes.

With the small waves and the threat of deteriorating conditions with the turning tide, the decision was made to cancel running two semi-finals and a final, and run just one extended 6 man final instead.

The final was therefore fought out between Speller, Afonso, Bolam, Alfano and an interesting battle between Father and son Gary and Phil Le Neveu. It was Phil who was to set the pace as the heat got underway, pulling two spins and a well executed roll early in the heat. This was followed up with another wave with a good solid roll to put him into a good lead. Father Gary steadily picked off some good waves himself, performing some quality spins for the conditions. Afonso put in all the manoeuvres he could, but couldn’t quite find the better set waves he needed to raise his scoring potential. Bolam and Alfano couldn’t quite match up to their early round performances, perhaps requiring a bit more power in the waves to generate more speed.

As the heat drew to a close, it was current under 18’s British champion Speller who put on a spectacular late show to impress the judging panel. Firstly, on what was a pretty average looking left hand wave, Speller somehow boosted a big air roll out of nothing, receiving high scores from the judges. This was followed by a big back-flip attempt which was almost completed. To round off the final, he sped along another small left hander and launched a huge completely out of the water air roll in the shore break to seal the win.
