:// Can sharks predict an English storm?

[One good reason for onshore slop. No Sharks.]

News Winter breaks wrist at Porthleven

[Russell Winter]

One of Britain's top surfers is likely to be out of competition for several months after being injuried in an accident off the Cornish coast. by George Mojo

01/05/2008:// Thirty-three-year-old Russell Winter was surfing over head-high waves at Porthleven when he wiped out on the reef and broke his wrist.

Winter was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro and is due to undergo an operation later this week to repair the fracture..

Winter, who is originally from London but now lives in Newquay, had recently recovered from a serious ankle injury and had just begun competing again.

He was one of the top UK finishers at the recent O'Neill Highland Pro in Scotland and is the only British surfer ever to make the World Championship Tour.

Winter had spent several months before competing at Brimms Ness in Barbados - a favourite winter getaway for the British number one.

He became the first ever British surfer to win the Newquay Boardmasters in 2002 and is currently ranked outside the top 100 in the World Qualifying Series tour.

The British Bulldog, as he is known on the pro tour, is hoping to do well in that series in order to get back among the world's elite in the World Championship Tour.

Winter has also won the British and European title during his career and is remembered for beating the world-famous Kelly Slater in a first round heat in Hawaii.
