:// Can sharks predict an English storm?

[One good reason for onshore slop. No Sharks.]
Researchers are beginning to conclude that there may be a link between bad weather and sharks behaviour. Sharks have a very acute sensory system, and now its been put forward that they can detect pressure changes in the atmosphere.

News Northcore Europe are nominated for the Surfers Path 3rd Annual Green wave awards

Northcore Europe are pleased to announce their nomination in the Surfers Path 3rd Annual Green wave awards under the Surf Manufacturers category. by Matt Strathern

29/04/2008:// The Surfers Path Green wave awards was established to highlight “Exceptional environmental and humanitarian achievement” in the surfing world. The Northcore spokesman said of the nomination “It's a huge honour for us even to be included in the list of nominees which features some amazing organisations and individuals. We see having a positive environmental policy as an absolute necessity, it's part of our foundations as a company so we are really stoked to have this recognition”

Northcore are a UK based Carbon Neutral surf company who's brand is guided by a central belief and practice of manufacturing the best quality products available. Northcore's products are designed to stand the test of time whilst creating minimal negative impact on the environment.

Northcore aren't intent upon promoting their environmental policy for the sake of appearances, the belief in reducing their negative footprint on the planet is one that can be discovered by those who support the same ethic and it also allows Northcore as a company, to exist with a clearer conscience.

Northcore's environmental policy is simple, when making any decisions one of the primary considerations is the ecological impact. This policy pervades throughout everything the company does which includes simple practices like running the company vehicle on home made Bio-diesel, using organic cotton for their t-shirts, recycling used ink cartridges, labelling all product packaging with a re-cycle logo, using sustainably sourced paper and card wherever possible for packaging and printed business materials, producing packaging which can be re-used with the product, manufacturing items designed to last for years to promote longevity, re-using packaging materials and more.

Northcore are also realistic in their aspirations and acknowledge that its impossible at present to be 100% eco-friendly with their output, so steps have been taken to retro-actively reduce their carbon footprint by becoming a Carbon Neutral organisation. Working with the Dutch initiative, the Climate Neutral Group, the Northcore organisation has calculated its carbon emissions to include fuel and energy consumption along with its manufacturing output to produce a CO2 emissions figure. Climate Neutral then suggested the number of trees which would require planting annually to offset these emmissions, which for 2007 meant that 500 trees were planted in Northcore's name, expanding to 750 trees planted in 2008. The trees are planted in protected forest schemes throughout the world which are managed by local populations. Its difficult to place a truly accurate figure on CO2 emissions, but the Northcore tree planting initiative is a long term one with profits to be directed and increased, as the company continues to expand.

Theres a lot more which can be done, there are more improvements to be made and environmentally conscious initiatives to consider but Northcore are heading in the right direction with the companies eyes firmly fixed on continually developing as a sustainable and socially responsible boardriding organisation
