BPSA title race set to explode by George Mojo

12/09/2005:// Tour leader Ruebin Pearce could take a major step towards winning this season's British Professional Surf Association series with victory at the Headworx Welsh Open.

With four events of the 2005 season remaining, Pearce goes into this weekend's event at Freshwater West with a string of good results behind him including two victories.

The Headworx team rider made the semi-finals of the Highland Open in Scotland earlier this month on the back of wins in Sri Lanka and Jersey.

Pearce's main rivals are Mark Harris and Newquay flat-mate Llewellyn Whittaker. Both surfers have also shown consistency on the tour and have the ability to turn things around.

Cornish surfer Oli Adams heads the junior rankings with South Devon's Matt Capel in striking distance back in third place. Capel is looking to build on his recent Channel Island victory.

Capel, from Kingsbridge, is delighted with his performances so far: "It's just great to have a sponsor who wants me to ride my own way and express my own personality - in and out of the water. At the end of the day, I'm just another person doing my best to enjoy life! I'm stoked to be given the opportunity to challenge my surfing day in day out, and to have the freedom to be myself."

Nicole Morgan has a big lead in the ladies division having won the opening two contests. Gwen Spurlock is chasing hard in second place.

The contest is taking place over the weekend of September 24 and 25th.
