News Razjman to defend world longboard title

[World champion Phil Razjman]

Preparations are underway for the opening event of the World Longboard Tour in France by George Mojo

22/04/2008:// There are just two events in this year's series with Les Cavaliers, in Anglet staging the first leg ahead of the planned finale at Trestles in California, during October.

Reigning ASP world longboard and defending Oxbow WLT champion Phil Razjman, from Brazil, will be among the top 45 surfers and three wildcards at the famed beachbreak.

Rajzman, who clinched his maiden world title last year, must defend his crown from former holders Hawaiian Bonga Perkins, Americans Colin McPhilips and Joel Tudor, Aussie Josh Constable and rising French longboard star Antoine Delperro.

Twenty-year-old Delperro, who is originally from the French Mediterranean coast but now resides in Anglet, will be Europe's favorite and used to the hollow beachbreak of Les Cavaliers.

Delperro will be going all out to win his first ASP World Longboard Tour event this year.

"The waves at Les Cavaliers offer great potential for longboarding when it gets good," said Delperro. "To have the opportunity to surf against the world's best surfers including legends like Bonga Perkins is great and the way things have been going so far for professional longboarding is really promising."

Delperro, who came 5th in the 2007 Oxbow WLT after he was eliminated by Rajzman, is a complete longboarder combining modern style and classic maneuvers, the right weapons to come up against the world's best surfers when competition resumes next month.

"I want to win the event," said Delperro. "The surfer I fear most is myself, as I need to improve mentally when it comes to tight heats. Surfing at home brings both great motivation as well as pressure because you always want to do well in front of your family, friends, sponsors and supporting crowd."

Also in the starting line-up are longtime leading longboarders Duane De Soto, from Hawaii, Brazil's Carlos Bahia and Eduardo Bag, Jackson Close, from Australia, Taylor Jensen, from America, and Frenchman Jonathan Larcher

The Anglet event is being staged drom May 5 to 11.
