Oceanside surfer speaks out at Copa Las Americas Pro- Am

12/04/2008:// Oceanside surfer and WiLDCOAST Ambassador Hayley Conant, used the opening ceremony of the Copa las Américas Pro-Am 2008, to promote the protection of of Mexico's fragile coast and ocean.
We want a clean ocean for surfers, people and marine wildlife", stated Hayley during the opening ceremony of the surf contest at Playa Diamante to a packed press conference. Alarmed by the longtime tradition of the illegal consumption of sea turtle meat and eggs in Mexico, Hayley released sea turtles for a packed crew of Mexican radio, television and print reporters including CNN-Latin America eager to document the the "surfer-ecologista" from California. During the sea turtle release, Hayley asked everyone to refrain from eating sea turtles and eggs--including surfers. The states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Michoacan are the sea turtle centers of Mexico and are the center for the illegal trade in sea turtle eggs.
"It is so sad that that some surfers in Mexico think its cool to eat sea turtle eggs," said Hayley. "They don't know that they are helping to eliminate sea turtles from the ocean and are risking a stiff jail sentence if they are caught. Real surfers don't eat sea turtles."
Hayley first became involved with WiLDCOAST during the Billabong Dempsey Holder Ocean Festival. "I love everything that the organization represents. Since I spend almost three to four hours surfing everyday and I finally found a way through WiLDCOAST to give back to the ocean and its wildlife everything it gives to me," said Hayley.
Hayley will continue to represent WiLDCOAST throughout the Copa Las America Pro-Am Tour and during surfing contests worldwide throughout 2008.
"We could have not asked for a better ambassador than Hayley. She is the living representation of what WiLDCOAST stands for" said Serge Dedina, WiLDCOAST's Executive Director. "She not only is a great surfer, but is a passionate activist who recognizes the need to protect our coast and ocean. She is a great role model for female surfers worldwide."
