05/09/2005:// South Devon pro surfer Eugene Tollemache has embarked on a tough training regime after being out of competition for eight months following an horrific wipeout in Peru.
The former English champion, from Totnes, needed surgery in London to fuse together several broken vertebrae damaged while surfing heavy beachbreak waves in the South American country.
Tollemache, who surf's for the UK Resin8/Saltrock team, has spent the last month riding both long and shortboards around the Devon and Cornwall coast in a bid to get back to full fitness.
A one-time chef for Padstow-based Rick Stein, he is setting his sights on competing on the World Qualifying Series and British Professional Surf Association tours next season.
It's been a difficult 18 months for Tollemache, who's fearless attitude to big waves has earned him special respect. In 2004, he came down with Dengue Fever after being shipwrecked on an Asian surf safari.
"I underwent an operation on my neck at Derriford Hospital, in Plymouth, in April, and it all went as well as could be hoped for although there were some nail-biting moments to say the least," Tollemache told BBC Guernsey.
"the injury has left me more mentally prepared and focussed than ever. My top priority is to gain peak fitness in time for a trip to Hawaii."
Tollemache, who is currently in India on a surfing photo-shoot, will spend several weeks in the Outer Hebrides board testing with other members of the Resin8 Uk squad, including Isle of Lewis surfers and team-mates Derek and Ross MacLeod.
