24/03/2008:// The victory for San Segundo ins stormy 4-5ft waves at Tapia de Casariego gives him an early lead in the European pro ratings.
The Zarautz surfer won the four-men final ahead of Frenchman Simon Marchand, Edgar Nozes, from Portugal, and Spain's Pablo Solar to take top spot at one of the longest running events in Europe.
San Segundo, who surfed only four waves in the thirty-minute decider, posted the highest wave score with a 7.17 halfway through the final, securing his lead with a back-up score of
5.67 points out of possible 10.
"I only surfed 4 waves during the final," said San Segundo. "I started to be nervous when the 3 others started to get back-to-back waves, but I got the good one and no better wave came to the other three.
San Segundo also remains one of the top ASP European pro junior surfers.
"I did not expect to do such a good result in the first contest of the year," he said. "I don't realize yet I have won it but I am stoked to get this start and lead the ratings."
Marchand, long time WQS campaigner and top French surfer for the past five years, finished second in the Goanna Pro, his best result in two years.
Now focusing on the ASP European Pro Surf Tour, Marchand got his 2008 campaign underway in good form defeating 2004 ASP European Pro Surf Tour champion Justin Mujica in the quarterfinals.
"I am glad for Marcos and he deserved to win this contest," said Marchand. "It was not easy to paddle out today with the storm and crazy winds but it is good to get back on tour."
Marchand, who showed he was focused and fit throughout the event, did not find any opportunity to catch-up with San Segundo, blaming his board choice.
"I had good scores on my way to the final and felt fit and ready," said Marchand. "I changed my mind in the last minute before paddling out and took a new surfboard that did not suit the conditions. Wrong call."
