First day sees Ticos through to next heats
by Ellen Zoe Golden
22/03/2008:// During the first day of competition at the III Campeonato Centroamericano de Surf de Panamá 2008, which kicked off this morning at Playa Venao, Provincia de Todos Los Santos, Panamá, the Costa Ricans who participated in the trial heats competed proficiently and advanced seemingly without problems.
The Ticos who passed will begin their next heats tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. Panama time.
These include, in the Open category, Jaco’s Luis Vindas and Juan Carlos Naranjo, Derek Esterillos’ Danny Bishko and Carlos Muñoz and Quepos’ Anthony Segura. The Open category went two rounds with a very special heat that included Muñoz and Bishko. Muñoz offered a strategy that fellow countryman Bishko knew to take advantage of with the connection of two sublime rights. This maneuvering awarded 1st place to Bishko, yet both passed this heat.
In Juniors, Derek Gutiérrez (Jaco), Bishko and Segura made it through to the next stage. All three passed with no disadvantages.
In addition, the Women’s division featured the resident Tica of Playa Dominical, Debbie Zec, running the only heat for the trials at this stage. Yet, Zec was not selected for the tricolor logo over the three Panamericans in her heat, among them the 9-time champion of Panama, Sonia García.
Now, with the trials completed, the Costa Rican National Surf Team have added nine competitors to their roster, while Panama has added eight, El Salvador and Nicaragua each have added one. Guatemala did not enter participants into the trials today.
“Today, we were precise and guessed right. The team was working very well and it was reflected in the results of the heats. The results of those in the bullfights this morning will allow us to form a support for the National Selected Surf Team and that will surely add points in the following days as necessary,” commented Randall Chávez, second Technical Director of the Costa Rica National Surf Team.
Tomorrow regular competition will begin in all the categories of the III Campeonato Centroamericano de Surf de Panamá 2008 including Open Junior, Women’s, Bodyboard, Bodyboard Women’s and Longboard.
