News WiLDCOAST, Whales and Pachico

WiLDCOAST Executive Director Serge Dedina will be interviewed on NBC Nightly News by Serge Dedina

21/03/2008:// WiLDCOAST Executive Director Serge Dedina will be interviewed on NBC Nightly News on Friday March 21st (check local listings for time) about his conservation work with Francisco "Pachico" Mayoral, the guardian of the gray whales of Laguna San Ignacio, Mexico. Dedina and Mayoral will be featured on the "Making a Difference" segment of the Nightly News Program. Dedina who is also the author of "Saving the Gray Whale" has worked to support conservation efforts in Laguna San Ignacio since 1993. Dedina and Pachico were interviewed by Maria Celeste Arraras, the Telemundo network anchor for "Al Rojo Vivo" who is also a NBC News Correspondent.

Pachico is a lifelong fishermen and whalewatching guide who first had a friendly contact with a gray whale back in 1972, changing his life forever. When the Mitsubishi Corporation threatened to build an industrial salt harvesting facility along the shoreline of Laguna San Ignacio, Pachico played a key role in alerting the world about the project.

Today Pachico works with his family running an ecotourist camp, Pachico's Eco-Tours, and safeguarding the whales and wildlife of Laguna San Ignacio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pachico was also featured in the award winning IMAX film, Ocean Oasis.

Since 2005 Wildcoast has worked with the Laguna San Ignacio Conservation Alliance to support the conservation of threatened lands around the lagoon and recently completed a historic 140,000 conservation deal to protect the entire southern portion of the lagoon.
