Surf documentary scoops at film festival by Howard Swanwick

03/03/2008:// The much awaited documentary `Wave Riders’ premiered in the prestigious Jameson Dublin International Film Festival on 22 February 2008 to a rapt audience. In a pre screening introduction Festival Director Ghrainne Humphries informed film goers that she could have sold out the event many times over – such was in the interest in this spectacular film about surfing in the west of Ireland.

The film is a result of a highly successful collaboration between Director Joel Conroy of Inís Films based in Dublin and Producer Margo Harkin of Besom Productions in Derry which finally came to fruition thanks to part-financing by the European Union through the Interreg IIIA Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the ICBAN Partnership, Northern Ireland Screen, Irish Film Board/ Bord Scannán na hÉireann, BBC Northern Ireland and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland.

Upon viewing each of the films in the Dubin Film Festival from a diverse international programme including several Hollywood films, audiences are asked to rate them on a maximum 5 star basis. The award is given to the audience’s highest scoring film. Producer Margo Harkin said: "Not only has Director Joel Conroy's beautiful film finally been realised but it also has had the best possible start by winning the Audience Award at the Jameson Dublin Film Festival. We are absolutely delighted as it's the only award of the festival and is an indication of the excitement that the film has already generated. We have heard that word of mouth is spreading like wildfire so we are obviously happy that people will see the North West of Ireland in a highly positive way through the film. We hope to get a theatrical release in the west at least but we intend to hold a special screening in Bundoran in the near future. The film will also be shown at the Belfast Film Festival on 19 April 08 so one way or another a wider audience will get to see it very soon.”
