South African powers to victory by George Mojo

09/08/2005:// South African David Weare has moved into third place in the World Qualifying Series rankings after a runner-up finish at the Rip Curl Boardmasters in Cornwall.

Weare was defeated in the final at Fistral Beach, Newquay, by fellow countryman Antonio Bortoletto.

There was just three points separating the surfers with Bortoletto making sure of victory with a superb nine point wave.

Weare started strongly with two quick waves scoring a credible 7.0 and a 7.27.

However, with just 10 minutes on the clock and needing a combination of scores, Bortoletto managed to turn things around.

On his first wave he took the top off the wave with his three perfectly executed turns to bag a 9 pointer, after a quick scramble and needing a 5.27, he managed to create an 8-point ride to leave Weare in his wake.

Bortoletto was previously ranked 105th will now find himself shooting up the ratings in his search for a spot on the World Championship Tour. He said: "I can't believe this is happening, thank god."

Exeter-based Josh Lewan was the highest-placed Briton at the contest with an equal 73rd place finish.

Brazilian Silvana Lima beat Aussie Serena Brooke to win the women's Nokia Pro in a one-sided encounter.

Brooke didn't manage to get a decent score while her South American counterpart destroyed every wave that came through on the low-tide banks.

Lima, who scored a 6.6 and a 7.0, was delighted with her performance: "I am very happy to be here in England, I want to congratulate Serena and thank everyone'.

Briton Russell Winter has slipped to 17th place on the World Qualifying Series pro tour after finishing just inside the top 50 at the Tahara Pro, in Japan.

The Newquay surfer went out of the 6star competition at the second round stage.

Brazilian Danilo Costa won the final against world numbe three Aussie Shaun Cansdell at Akabane Beach.
