Episode ten of the ubiquitous JFC was screened on Sunday, and HBO have now cancelled the show.
What did I think of it? Classic Milch, and ultimately an accurate portrayal of life around Imperial Beach.
You either like Milch or you hate him. I rarely find anyone sitting on the fence. I found myself desperately wanting the show to reach a conclusion, not because I disliked it, but because that’s how I find his shows.
If you had the opportunity to watch Deadwood, you’ll know exactly what I mean, some episodes were almost glacial, with this sort of hallucinogenic cacophony which apparently is going nowhere. But it did, and Deadwood was one of HBO’s real success stories.
So what of JFC? I loved it, I thought it showed accurately the lifestyle of IB, and the characters you can expect to find there. Of course I’m not suggesting everyone in IB is a drug addict, OCD grandmother or delusional lottery winner, but you can expect to find all those kind of people hanging around. And of course, some damn good surfers. So many surf productions which have been marketed to the masses are just god-awful portrayals of surfing, that I really hoped this would be something else. Point Break, Blue Crush, the list is endless, but JFC is complete turn around. Nunn and the Fletcher influence certainly played their part in keeping a tight, gritty script and even the surfing sequences weren’t half bad.
Some things I know and some things I don't, but it looks like Milch got back in the game, for sure.

But your right about not everyone being this far "off" but there are alot of people out there, going through the same things these folks are.

From the first frames of the title reel, with that great Joe Strummer track and surfing montage, I remember telling my wife who was sitting next to me, "I already love it!" The next hour of surreal "Twin Peaks" like television was obtuse, yet engaging, plus the surfing shots were spot on. All the characters were quirky to say the least and I hoped that they would develop into a grand ensemble like other HBO series of yore.
Alas, the plot became lost in lieu of difficult dialog, that some of the more novice cast couldn't pull of well. And what of the surfing? That was the biggest flaw, the surfing took a back seat for too many episodes and when it was reintroduced, usually it was for only a second.
Milch may have had a bit to high a concept for the show and his hubris could have prevented it from being saved, but that's just me speculating.
Oh well, seems surfing's portrayal will be forever cursed in movies and television. Maybe DiCaprio will do the Dora bio pic and do it well, but all I can think of is that new Matthew McConaughey flick "Soul Surfer" and my expectation retreat again.
Oh well, at least there are Kem Nunn books to read!
